**Controlled Burns (Prescribed Burning)**

Controlled burns—also known as hazard reduction or prescribed burns—are planned, low-intensity fires designed to reduce accumulated ground fuel.

Extensive research by organizations like CSIRO and the [Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA, formerly DEC/DPAW)](https://www.dbca.wa.gov.au/) demonstrates that fuel reduction significantly alters fire behavior and lowers fire intensity. By reducing available fuel, these burns protect lives and property while supporting long-term ecosystem health.

#### How They Work

Prescribed burns are conducted under strict weather conditions to control fire intensity. The goal is to clear leaf litter and ground fuel without igniting larger vegetation, logs, or tree canopies. It is also important to manage factors like smoke drift and weed dispersion.

#### Who Conducts Them

During suitable weather outside the Prohibited Burning Period, controlled burns are carried out by state agencies (such as DBCA and [DFES](https://dfes.wa.gov.au/)), local governments, and volunteer bushfire brigades.

#### Guidance for Property Owners

- **Regulations:** Local laws dictate if and when you may burn. Check requirements with your local shire or council before lighting. See the [Shire of Mundaring Burning Periods page](https://www.mundaring.wa.gov.au/ResidentServices/FireEmergency/Pages/Burning_Periods.aspx) for current information.
- **Support:** Contact your local volunteer bushfire brigade for advice.
- **Resources:** [DFES provides information and pamphlets on planned (hazard reduction) burning](https://dfes.wa.gov.au/hazard-information/bushfire/planned-burning) to help landholders plan safe, effective burns.
